The University Leadership Initiative 2 (ULI2) is a NASA grant opportunity aimed at empowering university-led teams to take leadership roles in addressing key technical challenges in aeronautics. These teams are expected to define bold, multidisciplinary projects, propose innovative solutions, and apply creative team structures to enhance research impact. Proposals should align with one of six strategic thrust areas:
1. Safe, Efficient Growth in Global Operations 2. Innovation in Commercial High-Speed Aircraft 3. Ultra-Efficient Subsonic Transports 4. Safe, Quiet, and Affordable Vertical Lift Air Vehicles 5. In-Time System-Wide Safety Assurance 6. Assured Autonomy for Aviation Transformation
The submission process involves two steps. Interested universities must first submit a short Step-A proposal by June 26, 2025. Based on evaluations, selected teams will be invited to submit a full Step-B proposal. All submissions are made electronically through the NSPIRES system.
An applicant workshop will be held on April 30, 2025, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. ET to provide more guidance.
